Early Life
Hymie D. Berman was born on August 10, 1909 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to David Berman and Etta Lurie who immigrated from Lithuania. His mother’s family was related to Isaac Luria, a famous Jewish scholar. Hymie was 1 of 11 children born to his mother and father. Hymie lived on Fremont Ave. North* in Minneapolis until he was 10 years old. Hymie went to Logan School from kindergarten through 4th grade. Hymie was in boy scouts and became an eagle scout in 1924. Hymie went to the University of Minnesota and he never had a serious relationship with a girl until he met Ruth Schwartz whom he met at the university. Hymie and Ruth dated for 4 years until they knew the relationship was right. Hymie and Ruth got married on June 5, 1932.
*The Author of this website, the great grandson of Hymie coincidentally was also born on August 10 (93 years after Hymie's birth) and lives on Fremont but in Chicago.
